PS3-Steam features of Portal 2 explained

January 18, 2011 by Eric Swain

The details of the PS3 version of Steam and Portal 2 are explained.

It was announced back at E3 that Steam would be coming to the PS3 with the release of Portal 2. Today we got a few more details of what that means. For starters it included cross platform play. Portal 2 come with co-op and now that mode can be played PC/Mac vs. PS3 players. It has comes with cloud based storage of PS3 saved games and cross platform chat.  But the most exciting detail is for those who buy the PS3 version of the game they unlock the Steam Play (PC/Mac) copy of it as well with no additional cost by linking your PSN and Steam accounts.

We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers,” said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. “PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites.

Valve's co-founder and President Gabe Newell also hopes to bring the same type of content updates that Valve has become known for and Steam allows to the PS3 version of their games as well. This is a real turn around for Valve who originally wouldn't touch the PS3 with a 10 foot pole. outsourcing the porting of the Orange Box to another company and leaving PS3 owners out to dry with regards to L4D and L4D2. Portal 2, and Steam Works, comes out this April.
