Meet Patent Number US 2013/0002550 A1, published on January 3, 2013. According to the title, this patent is for a "Determination of controller three-dimensional location using image analysis and ultrasonic communication. It was filed by SCEA on September 13, 2012 and is a continuation of application 12/145,455 filed in 2008 (the original PS Move patent).
This patent was originally discovered over at the Silent Chief, and it looks like a new and improved Playstation Move for what may be the next Playstation. It looks like PS Move but seems a lot different. The diagrams below outline how this device looks and how they intend it to be used.
With all the JS Joust going on unofficially around the country, I wonder how this improved Sony Move would work with the game? The addition of a camera / sensor for detecting the move controls is unique. It is as though the Kinect and the Wii motes have finally merged into one product. If it allows for players to move carefully and precisely, movement controls may finally be getting to a place where people would want to use them.
The patent is available here and contains more technical detail than these pictures from the Silent Chief. Check it out:
