The U.S. Has More Internet-Connected Devices than People

January 4, 2013 by Alex Co

So, just how big have consoles, tablets, smartphones have become? Read on to find out…

Nowadays, we lve in a connected world to the point that most people can't live without having access to the internet and its various social, business and entertainment portals.

But just how connected are today's people? In NPD's Connected Home report, it states that there are more internet-connected devices in American homes than actual Americans! Read that again and let it sink in.

In the report, it reveals that there are 425 million internet-connected tech devices and 39 million consoles that can be found in U.S. homes. To put things in perspective, consoles came in at third with 39 million units connected to the web, which was beaten by laptops/desktops at 183.8 million and coming in at second were smarphones at 133 million. Also of note, the report found 31.8 million tablets in the U.S., 16 million HDTVs directly online, 12.9 million Blu-ray players, and 8.5 million streaming media boxes.

NPD's data was based on a survey of 4,000 U.S. adults conducted in the last quarter of 2012. It didn't count E-readers, routers, cable TV boxes and anything capable of the internet but wasn't connected.

Beyond, the NPD Group expects the "second-screen" experience and integration between TVs and smartphones to push the market.

So, is anyone surprised by this data? I know a lot of us can't live without the internet but to think it outnumbers the entire U.S. population is kinda absurd, don't you think? How many internet-ready devices do you have on now?
