Working Prototype Version Of Primal Rage 2 Surfaces

December 31, 2012 by Matt Hawkins

To some, it might be a textbook example of how some games are cancelled for totally valid reasons.

If you're in your mid 30s, then you no doubt have fond memories of the big fighting game boom from the early/mid 90s. And alongside Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were a host of other contenders to the throne. Most were not quite as good as the aforementioned duo, but more than a few had their own charm.

Take Primal Rage for example. On the most basic level, it was a fighting game starring dinosaurs. A simple concept that was enhanced by characters that were animated via stop motion models. The end result was a game that strongly resembled the cinematic works of Ray Harryhausen.

While never a massive hit, there are plenty who have fond memories of the game, some of whom who wished that there was a sequel back in the day. Actually, there was, but it was cancelled. But no one has ever seen the follow-up in motion, until now. Joystiq recently posted this video, of a working prototype that was recently unearthed:

As you can see, it's a bit weird. On the plus side, the animation is fantastic, and even more fluid than the first Primal Rage. But on the negative side is how you're not controlling dinosaurs. There is a storyline reason that justifies the change, but that hardly matters.

Sometimes a game is canceled and it's a downright shame. But in other instances, it's perhaps for the best. Which do you believe this qualifies as?
