Popular Mechanics Lists the Top 10 Most Innovative Video Games of 2012

December 14, 2012 by Alex Co

Tech magazine lists its most innovative games of 2012. You might be surprised at some of the entries.

In the last few weeks, TIME magazine has listed their top 10 games of the year, and even top 100 games by era. Afer that, Yahoo got in on the act with their most disappoint games of 2012 list. Now, Popular Mechanics is getting in on the bandwagon, too.

Seeing as Popular Mechanics is a publication based on technology and whatnot, it does make a bit more sense when they do a list about videogames, but as is the thing with lists, they are subjective and it wouldn't surprise me if people disagree with it.

For an easier read, we listed the top games in list form below. If you want to read why they chose each specific game, I suggest reading through it one at a time.

  • The Unfinished Swan – Platform: PS3
  • Journey – Platform: PS3
  • Escape Plan – Platform: PS Vita
  • Sound Shapes – Platform: PS3 and PS Vita
  • Botanicula – Platform: PC
  • Zombi U – Platform: Wii U
  • Super Stardust Delta – Platform: PS Vita
  • Nano Assault Neo – Platform: Wii U
  • Halo 4 – Platform: Xbox 360
  • Planetside 2 – Platform: PC

Particularly noteworthy here is that they've listed three PS Vita games and five in total for Sony's platforms. However, what might be more controversial is Halo 4's inclusion. Not discounting the game's quality by any means, but to count an FPS — and its fourth entry at that — as "innovative" might sit wrong with some people.

Do you agree with their list and if not, which games would you add or take out? What are your top 10 most innovative games of the year?

Thanks, NeoGAF
