Street Fighter X Mega Man “8-Bit” Game Revealed by Capcom, Will Be a Free Downloadable Title

December 10, 2012 by Alex Co

Capcom has a surprise for Street Fighter and Mega Man fans. Click on to read more and watch the trailer.

In a rather odd but endearing move, Capcom has decided to kick off Mega Man's 25th anniversary by merging it with Street Fighter. Yep, you read that right. There's a Street Fighter X Mega Man game coming out! But it might not be what you were expecting.

Just in case that wasn't weird enough, the game won't sport the usual HD graphics associated with today's top games. Instead, Street Fighter X Mega Man will have 8-bit graphics to go along with its 8-bit soundtrack. In short, expect NES visuals here, people.

Now, before you brush the game off, I suggest giving the trailer a watch. I don't know if it's just me and nostaliga, but there's a certain charm to seeing Ryu, Chun-Li, etc. be replicated in 8-bit. Not to mention the soundtrack is remade using the limited musical capacity of that mode, too.

Now for the best part, Street Fighter X Mega Man will be a FREE game! Fans can download it on December 17 via Capcom's Unity blog. So, if you've ever wanted to have Street Fighter characters be the villain in a Mega Man game and even acquire their powers, you'll get that chance next week.

This odd throwback to Mega Man wouldn't be possible without Seow Zong Hui — a Singaporean who approached Capcom's Christian Svensson back at EVO 2012 with the skeleton SF X MM running on a laptop. Also of note, fan "A_Rival" was responsible for the soundtrack. He has blended Mega Man tunes with Street Fighter's, which, based on the trailer, sounds fantastic.

As for "other" Mega Man news, Capcom's blog states, "As for more MM25 news… stay tuned. I've been running those meetings all year and we have stuff to share that day and through 2013. We know it's been a hard year for Mega Man fans, but I hope this proves our love and intent to the series, and that we have not heard the last of the little guy." So, I assume they have a game or two to announce once 2013 comes around, no?

Will you download this free game on the 17th? What do you make of it so far?
