Ubisoft disables part of its DRM

January 4, 2011 by Eric Swain

Ubisoft releases part of its DRM scheme with a whimper.

Previously Ubisoft's draconian DRM measures required that a player be logged in to their servers at all times during the playing of their single player games. Should you lose you internet for some reason the game would immediately save you progress and pause the game for a time so you could get logged back in. Those with shoddy internet connections, like I used to have or those without internet at all were SOL as it would render the game virtually unplayable. The news came with not a bang, but a whimper. If fact no one knew about it until on reddit today, one gamer found a patch that was released for Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction. These games could now be continually played without an internet connection. An internet verification was necessary for installation and boot up only. Two screenshots were offered as proof. Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction.

These DRM measure were hated by gamers and some forget that in some circumstances you had to log in to Uplay to play single player games on the console. I remember I had to wait for it to log in and verify the disc I had just bought new was real before I could play The Forgotten Sands. I understand companies wanting to protect their properties, but these measures were circumvented by pirates rather easily and annoy to no ends legitimate consumers. This is the first step in the right direction.
