Video Games Sale Slip For The 12th Consecutive Month

December 6, 2012 by Matt Hawkins

Despite new hardware and heavy hitting software, the industry’s sales figures are still tumbling.

Even though the Wii U managed to produce impressive first week figures, and the long awaited arrival of big name titles like Halo 4, Assassin's Creed 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, game sales slipped once again in November. That makes it the 12th consecutive month in a row.

According to NPD figures that Polygon cites, total industry sales were down 11% when compared to last year, at $2.25 billion. This is mostly attributed to a 13% drop in hardware purchases. Yes, the Wii U did very well, and so did the Xbox 360 and PS3, despite the fact that most people own those consoles already. But it still wasn't enough to bolster overall figures.

It's worth noting, once again, that digital software sales are not accounted for, but given how important hardware numbers apparently are, once has to wonder if having the full sales numbers will make that much of a difference.

Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to unveil new hardware in time for holiday 2013, and analysts are predicting father healthier figures by then.
