Molyneux: I Would Have to Be In Some Vegetative State to Consider Retirement

December 3, 2012 by Alex Co

Rejoice, gaming fans! Molyneux will be making games for a very long time.

Remember when we posted something about Peter Molyneux where he called his iOS project Curiosity a disaster and was in tears due to people not believing in him?

As it turns out, the famed British game designer seems to have recovered already. And on the contrary, he's not even contemplating retirement now and thinks the idea is "abhorrent."

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Molyneux talks about retirement and how he's not going to stop making games until he's in a vegetative state to even consider retirement.

I'm either going to stop making games when everyone in the world just hates the games I make or the day when I die. I feel more passionate, more engaged, more energetic about making games now than I ever have. The thought of retirement is abhorrent to me. I would have to be in some vegetative state to consider retirement.

In addition to refuting all that retirement talk, Molyneux also touches upon his upcoming game that's on Kickstarter now which is Godus. As of the time of writing this, Godus has still not yet hit its Kickstarter goal of £450,000. Truth be told, it's not looking so hot since it's only at £193,000 now and there's only 18 days left to finance the game. Molyneux talks about some concerns people have that Molyenux should fund the game himself since he;s — y'know — loaded and whatnot.

Everyone kind of thinks I'm loaded with money and live in Versailles or something, and drive around in a gold Rolls Royce,..None of that is true. I'm not starving by any means, but I haven't got unlimited wealth. I used a lot of money to found 22 Cans, to release Curiosity, and to build a team of 20 people.

Molyneux also reveals that if Godus doesn't reach its Kickstarter goals, then he might resort to more traditional routes (ie: courting publishers) when it comes to the actual game and adds, "We'd have to look at some of the more traditional routes. I think it would be a tough world to be in if we weren't funded, that's for sure."

While 22 Cans already has Curiosity out, the studio plans to have an alpha version of Godus available to backers around Christmas time. And this is when the studio will use analytics to track player behaviour and alter the experience as they see fit.

So, is it good or bad news for you that Molyneux won't be retiring anytime soon? Are any of you excited to see Godus be an actual game or would it be more of Molyneux's over-hyping but under-delivering?
