First Look At The Cave, The Latest From Double Fine Productions

November 30, 2012 by Matt Hawkins

As well as the latest from the mind of Ron Gilbert.

2012 has been quite the year from Double Fine. First they made history with the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter, offering an inside look at how they make their games, to an unprecedented degree. Then they opened their doors even wider by allowing outside parties to bare witness and even influence Amnesia Fortnight.

And while their next game is still a ways off, we at least have our first look at the next game to be helmed by Ron Gilbert:

As you can see, The Cave is an action platformer with a heavy emphasis on puzzles. Which is hardly a surprise given the man in charge; it's the latest from Ron Gilbert, one of the most respected minds from the world of adventure games and interactive fiction.

The Cave actually borrows heavily from an early title of Gilbert's, Maniac Mansion from 1987. The initial idea was first laid out when he was still working for LucasArts, but he was never able to do anything with it.

When Gilbert joined Tim Schafer's studio a few years back (it’s worth noting how it was Gilbert who gave Schafer his first big break during the 80s), the concept was dusted off and presented to his new boss, which Schafer was receptive of.

The Cave represents Gilbert's attempt at not just going back to his roots but also creating an overall richer experience. Which is not possible due to advances in technology and lessons learned, not only from his own past works, but from seeing how the medium has evolved over the years as well.

The game will be published by Sega sometime early next year.
