In an age of video game reboots and remixed nostalgia, it only makes sense that Atari is coming back to the scene with guns blazing. Their proposed console, the ‘Ataribox’, is brand new Atari hardware that is apparently “years in the making”. In an interview with VentureBeat, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais revealed that it will work around PC technology, and that the company is still busy finalising the design. No word on when Atari will release it to the public, but stay tuned to Gameranx for breaking news.
Atari posted a very brief teaser trailer for the Ataribox, which immediately stands out from PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch thanks to its wooden finish. Atari hit the market with Atari 2600 in 1977 and helped popularise games like Space Invaders and Pac-Man. It was also the home of the much-maligned E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Atari filed for bankruptcy in 2013, but Chesnais bought it out, promising to make Atari great again.
