Youtube Will Not Monetize Clips With Gratuitous Video Game Violence

June 7, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

The winds of change are upon us.

Over the past few weeks, YouTube gamers have found themselves earning a little less than they usually, do. This is due to the fact YouTube has recently inducted a policy change, which seems to have affected YouTube clips featuring gratuitous violence.

In an interview with Polygon, a YouTube spokesperson clarified what would constitute de-monetization and how the policy is set to work.

Essentially, the change is that any clips which feature violence as a focal point will not be monetized, while the clips whereby occasional violence is seen is ok. As long as it’s not the focus of the video.

“Violence in the normal course of video gameplay is generally acceptable for advertising, but montages where gratuitous violence is the focal point is not,” says the spokesman. This leaves out monetization videos such as “The Best Kills in Resident Evil 7” or “The Best Kills in Call of Duty: WWII”.

“There is understandable concern from creators about what they can and can’t do.The biggest complaint from creators is that these five guidelines don’t give [them] enough context for producing videos. The new guidelines were designed to help with that.”

What do you think of Google’s shift in moneitization, warranted/unwarranted? Let us know in the comments below.
