Victor Vran: Overkill Impressions – A Dungeon Crawling We Shall Go

June 7, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

Full of demons, loot, and dungeon crawling.

If you’re in need of a new action role-playing video game on the PlayStation 4, then we’ll suggest giving Victor Vran: Overkill a look through. Developed by Haemimont Games, Victor Vran has already made it big debut back in 2015 though the title has recently been ported for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, known as Victor Vran: Overkill edition.

Overall, the Victor Vran storyline is nothing too thrilling, players take on the role of a demon hunter named Victor Vran who ends up in a city called Zagoravia in search for his best friend. The city has been an iconic location for demon hunters as the city became overturned by heinous creatures with even the most skilled hunters consistently failing to bring Zagoravia back to a peaceful state.

Without spoiling too much of the story, that’s about as much as I can give you, though the real fun in the game comes with the voice over and gameplay. Victor Vran has a unique attribute to him in that he seems to be cursed with a voice in his head, it’s this voice that will delight players through dungeon crawling.

You’ll find that the voice may question your moves and even break the fourth wall by making various video game references, though it’s this type of humor that I found enjoyable as I began to hunt down the various flood of demons and creatures that prevented me from progressing forward.

This is an action role-playing video game that doesn’t restrict players all that much as you’ll find that there are no classes to choose from. Instead, the developers have opted to let the player craft their character as they please. Ultimately, that means there’s, even more, loot you can pick up and enjoy, from giant hammers to shotguns and everything in between.

In fact, there is so much loot that can be picked up, you may find yourself constantly going back and forth within the menus to adjust your character on-the-fly. Essentially, depending on the mobs or the boss, picking a certain weapon such a shotgun to distance yourself will not only change your gameplay up but make it an even more enjoyable experience than the consistent locked down mundane class mechanics.

Each weapon has a variety of abilities, all of which will have a slight cooldown period, though each will showcase just how long the cooldown has left before the ability can be used again. Outside of the weapons, Victor Vran has demon powers which act a bit like magic, again, each demon power ability will also have a slight cooldown period.

To further customize your character, Victor Vran can pick up Destiny Cards, that have an unique attribute that can be added to your character such as additional health or other buffs that may come in handy during combat. Destiny Cards are more of a means to level and define your character as you progress through the narrative.

Being that this is the Overkill port of Victor Vran, players will receive the past DLC and expansions that have previously released for the game. You’ll have plenty of content to go through especially if you’re a fan of the action RPG genre. My time with the game so far has left me eager to dive into the next dungeon whether it be by myself or with the help of a friend online.

Full Disclosure: A copy of the game was provided by the publisher for purposes of this review.
