Walmart’s Black Friday Might Be In Jeopardy Due To Possible Strike

November 17, 2012 by Matt Hawkins

Making Change at Walmart is sending a message that their target is not the least bit happy with.

Walmart is always the topic of conversation come Thanksgiving time, due to their Black Friday video game deals (which is only the tip of the iceburg when it comes to everything else they offer that day). Along with the fact that their sale often drive customers into a frenzy. To the point that some go out of control, leading to much harm, even death.

Well, there's even more negative press for them to contend with this time; two groups associated with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union has been organizing strikes over the past few days, basically as a wake up call. They believe the company has made "attempts to silence workers who speak out for better jobs," according to Making Change at Walmart, one of the aforementioned entities.

The other group, OUR Walmart (which stands for Organization United for Respect Walmart), which Polygon reports is funded by the UFCW, has several demands that are outlined on their website. Which includes "freedom of speech", "dependable, predictable work schedules", "affordable healthcare", and "wages and benefits that ensure that no Associate has to rely on government assistance."

In response, Walmart filed an unfair labor practice charge and has issued a statement of their own:

"We are taking this action now because we cannot allow the UFCW to continue to intentionally seek to create an environment that could directly and adversely impact our customers and associates… If they do, they will be held accountable."

Walmart also claims that the strikes are an "exaggerated publicity campaign" and is assuring the public that they will have over a million associates working the holiday weekend. Meaning, if you wish to partake in any of the Black Friday deals that Walmart is offering, there's a very good chance that your local destination should be open to accept your business.

Though one should be mindful of the protests and the reasons behind them. As well as remember how there are plenty of retailers offering great deals on video games that same day. Perhaps those who have a better history of their treating employees.
