The Switch Now Fully Supports Unreal Engine 4

May 29, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

More games for the Switch!

Great news for developers, Nintendo’s hybrid console now is fully compatible with the Unreal 4 engine.

Previously, the Switch only had semi-compatibility, but now with update 4.16, the console can finally run the engine in it’s entirety

“After launching early support for Nintendo Switch development in February’s Unreal Engine 4.15 release, Epic is proud to announce fully-featured native support for the popular platform in Unreal Engine 4.16.

Epic Games has teamed up with Nintendo to release the full Unreal Engine 4 source code for Nintendo Switch to approved developers for free! After launching experimental support for Nintendo Switch development in February’s Unreal Engine 4.15 release, Epic is proud to announce fully-featured native support for the popular platform in Unreal Engine 4.16.”

While the tools are free, In order to gain access you need to first register a Nintendo licensed developer and then sign an NDA with Epic. Apparently, porting your current projects over to the Switch is pretty easy – so hopefully this means we will see a wide variety of games coming to the Switch in the near future.

In other Switch news, Nintendo has announced that it will be increasing production of console to meet the consumer demand.

According to sources connected to the Financial Times, Nintendo ain’t slowing down Nintendo Switch production any time soon. The sources state that Nintendo has increased its unit production to 18 million (up from 16 million reported by The Wall Street Journal) to avoid “customer tantrums” come holiday season.
