Black Ops 2: Fixing Lag Compensation

November 15, 2012 by Alex Co

For those annoyed by Black Ops 2’s "lag compensation" mechanic, here’s how to alleviate the stress…

For those who didn't know, Black Ops 2 employs some sort of "lag compensation" "fix" that helps people with lower connections when it comes to multiplayer. This was started in Modern Warfare 3 to prevent the match host from having an unfair advantage.

While this "feature" is frowned upon by some Call of Duty players, those who has always experienced matches with one to two bars are likely loving the change. If you still don't know what I'm talking about, have you ever encountered a head-to-head confrontation where you're sure you fired first but the enemy gets the better of you and on the kill cam, it shows he fired first? Yeah, it's happened to me a couple of times and it drove me nuts!

So, what if you're one of the many on the former camp? Well, here's one way to fix it. Once you're on the "Playlist" option on your preferred platform (this is the one with the Core, Hardcore, Combat Training, Party Games and Nuketown 2025 list), press the "Y" button or corresponding button on the platform you're on, you'll see that "Search Preferences" will come up on the screen which will let you choose between three choices. Switch this option from "Normal" to "Best." And while this might mean it takes longer to get you to a multiplayer match, it will mean that once you're in one, the connection will be the best one possible for you.

Here's a video of the whole thing shown by WoodysGamerTag:

Just a few things to note though, this isn't meant as an all-out fix. So once you applied this and find things are worse, then just revert back to "Normal" again. Of course, this wouldn't really be a problem in the first place if Activision had dedicated servers for its Call of Duty games, no? But that's another topic altogether.

Has any of you "suffered" from this lag compensation mechanic by Treyarch? On the other side of the spectrum, for those who always had problems getting a good connection in Call of Duty games, has this helped you find a "fair" match in anyway? Sound off and let us know. Hopefully, this fix will mean that both players who like the lag compensation feature and those who don't will have the best of both worlds, no?
