Wii U Will Not Have System-Wide Accomplishments

November 12, 2012 by Jordan Erica Webber

While individual games might have their own accomplishment systems, there will be no “trophies” or “achievements” system wide.

Details on the Wii U's online service have been left until quite late, with an official explanation of the account management system only given through Nintendo Direct a few days ago. In particular, there has been no word on whether the Wii U will have a similar achievements/trophies system to those of the PS3 and Xbox 360, which have been so popular with players. Nintendo has kept quiet on the matter, but Jeremiah Slaczka – the Creative Director and Co-Founder of 5th Cell – has spoken up on NeoGAF:

There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide. They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of "Global Starite Shards" which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is a Wii U launch title (at least in North America) from 5th Cell. The “500+” starite shards will apparently account for “20+ hours of gameplay”, so it looks like the idea behind them is similar to that behind achievements anyway, an incentive for the player to put more time into the game.

Does it matter to you whether any achievements are system wide? Or do you think existing systems like gamerscore are meaningless?
