Xbox 720 or PS4 Teased by Activision CEO to Be Out Next Year to Challenge the Wii U

November 11, 2012 by Alex Co

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has stated that “another console” is set to challenge the Wii U next year, but didn’t divulge which one.

We all know Nintendo's Wii U is set to come out this coming week to start the era of the next-generation of consoles.  But while Sony and Microsoft has kept mum on their next-gen plans, it's widely speculated that the PS4 or Xbox 720 is set for release next year, too.

Now, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has confirmed that "another new console" is coming to challenge the Wii U, and that "it will be very successful."

These are the words Kotick let out in the company's most recent earnings call held last week. Seeing as Kotick is the CEO of the biggest videogame publisher in the world, I think it's safe to assume that he knows a thing or two that we don't when it comes to Sony and Microsoft's next-gen plans, no?

We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful.

The big question here is, is Kotick referring to the PS4 or Microsoft's next Xbox. If we follow this generation's console lifecycle, the obvious choice would be the Xbox 720, seeing as Microsoft did release it first compared to Sony's PS3. Of course, with Sony "losing" this generation to Microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised if they release the PS4 first to gain a head start against whatever Microsoft has planned.

Regardless of what gets released first, I think it's safe to say that next year's E3 might be one of the most anticipated events the gaming world has in the last few years. Hopefully, it delivers.

Which console do you think Kotick was referring to in his statement? Do you think Sony would gamble releasing the PS4 first to gain a sizeable userbase advantage over the Xbox 720?

Thanks, IGN
