Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 Impressions – A Complex RTS

May 15, 2017 by Dennis Patrick

Experience the battles between the Allies and Axis forces in Tunisia.

Real-time strategy titles, or otherwise known simply as RTS, has a massive audience and each year there seems to be a slew of new titles being released into the market. The latest we’ve had the chance to check out is known as Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943, a video game developed Graviteam with publishers Strategy First Inc.

Overall, the video game follows battles between the Allies and Axis forces in Tunisia, where players take on the role of a commander. It will be your job sending out troops and being responsible for not only the battle victory but the lives of your men and women. It’s here that you’ll find new appreciation with the hard choices commanders in the field are left to make.

First off, as someone who is not the biggest fan of RTS titles, trying this title out I was immediately met with a steep learning curve. The video game was a bit overwhelming when first starting it up as I was confronted with a cluttered and frankly not the most appealing UI.

It would have been a bit more welcoming for newcomers to the genre to be met with a more informative tutorial with these menus slowly being introduced. Regardless, one thing that the game instantly showcases to players is the need of patience.

Battles can run a bit long and with the amount of strategy that goes into your movements, players may be in it for a long haul. There are a ton of aspects that gamers will need to keep an eye on when in battle which is a blessing for those who love as many details as possible when going through a RTS game, but may not be the most welcoming experience for newcomers to the RTS genre.

For instance, gamers will need to keep track of such aspects as their unit positions, weather conditions, or if any of your resources are in danger of the opposing force. With that said, there’s really two means of enjoying the title.

Traditionally, the game can be viewed in real-time as you watch your forces storm through the harsh terrains into battle. However, there is an Operations game mode that will present players with a more strategic view with a generic map. While it’s all preference, the Operations game mode may not be the most thrilling cinematic experience for players, but instead a more bare bones view.

When I mention a cinematic experience, I don’t want gamers to get the impression that the title is fleshed out with incredible visually stunning moments. Though for what it is, visually Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 is appealing as you see your units maneuver into position and attack the opposing force.

All-in-all, if you’re a fan of the RTS genre, Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 may be worth the purchase though if you’re looking for a video game to help ease you into the genre, you may want to steer clear from this title for the time being.

Full Disclosure: A copy of the game was supplied by the publisher for purposes of review.
