Sony Playstation Profits Hit £944M – Beating Their Best Since 1998

April 30, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

Sony is moving from strength to strength.

With the end of Sony’s financial and the yearly release of Sony’s financial statistics, the Entertainment powerhouse has announced that it has shipped 60 million consoles worldwide since it launched in 2013 – with 20 million of those being in the last financial year.

While that doesn’t mean that 60 million consoles have been sold, it shouldn’t be long until that becomes a fact.

Especially as Sony sold 2.9 million consoles in just the last three months, up from 2.3 million at the same time last year.Sony

Sony are predicting that they’ll sell another 18 million consoles in the next financial year, which means that by this time next year they should be on at least 78 million. This puts the PS4 sales ahead of the PS2 in the same lifecycle – this means that the PlayStation 4 could end up being the best-selling console of all time.

With that Sony have announced that their profits have hit £944M – the highest since 1998. That being said, the current financial year should beat the results with a prediction that profits will be up 25% in just 12 months.

In comparison to Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony seems to be completely overlapping its competitors. Nintendo announced that it’s profits are £200 million and Nintendo Switch sales that were ahead of all expectations. While Microsoft, as usual, remains on the Hush hush of business specifics, unofficial estimates though put the Xbox One lifetime total at around 29 million worldwide, so half that of the PlayStation 4.

With the Project Scorpio releasing sometime this year, we should see some form of a catch up from Microsoft – let’s hope the company has some extra exclusives to tease at this year’s E3.
