As reported not too long ago, Sony's PlayStation Vita is not doing so hot in its native homeland. Unfortunately, another week has gone by, which means another round of record low sales for the system.
According to NeoGAF, the place where everyone in America goes to hear about Japanese sales data, has the latest tale of the tape. And again, it's not good; between Oct 22 and Oct 28, only 5,806 Vitas were sold. During that same time span, the system it's trying to replace, the PSP, managed to move 14,541 units.
Meanwhile, Nintendo's latest handheld continues to be a sales juggernaut. The 3DS XL (or 3DS LL as they call it over there) sold 38,089 units, while the original 3DS is still going strong with 23, 453. Sony does have one tiny victory over the handheld competition it can be somewhat proud of; the Vita outsold the DSi by a fairly decent margin.
This is no doubt frustrating news to all Vita fans out there. It is without question one of the best handhelds ever produced, on a purely technical level, but what good is it if there are no games available? And because customers are sluggish on the system, it gives game makers little incentive to support the platform themselves.
It's a real chicken or the egg dilemma that Sony needs to figure out, and soon.
