Nintendo’s miniature take on the legendary NES console, as of today, has been discontinued worldwide.
The news first hit last week that Nintendo will be discontinuing production of the NES classic in North America just six months after it’s launch. Nintendo did not provide any solid information only stating that the company apologizes for its stock shortages:
“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year,”
“We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”
Now, speaking to Eurogamer, a Nintendo spokesperson announced that it will also be discontinuing production in both Europe and Japan, bringing an end to the short-lived NES reimagination across the board.
“We can confirm that we are no longer manufacturing the Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System,” The spokesperson said.
“If production resumes in the future, an update will be posted on the official Nintendo website.”
This news may be shocking to some considering how well the system has been selling since launch. The shrunk-down version of the classic NES console plugged into your TV and came preloaded with 30 games. It worked great, looked cool and was the perfect Christmas stocking filler, it’s a mystery why we won’t see any more of these consoles.
