Yooka-Laylee | Special Moves Guide

April 16, 2017 by Hayden Russell

Find all the info your need to complete your collectathon adventure in Yooka-Laylee with Gameranx’s guide!

Yooka-Laylee is Playtonic Games’ newest platforming adventure and is a total blast from the past. Following in Rare’s legacy of games including Banjo-Kazooi and Donkey Kong 64, Yooka-Laylee is a classic collectathon, which means there are tons of little items and tasks to complete during your journey. Luckily, Gameranx is here to save the day with our Yooka-Laylee guide.

If you’re going to survive the bright and colorful world of Yooka-Laylee, you’re going to need to master all of the game’s special moves. Here’s how to get each special move as well as how to use them.

  • Reptile Roll
    • Location: Free gift from Trowzer in the hub world of Hivory Towers
    • Use: Hold R2 (PS4), allows you to bowl over enemies and roll up steep hills. It uses your energy meter.
  • Sonar Shot
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Tribalstack Tropics.
    • Use: Use triangle to release a sonar beam that will help with puzzles and reveal secrets in the area. Can be used to activate the sleeping statues and catch invisible ghosts.
  • Buddy Slam
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Tribalstack Tropics.
    • Use: Press L2 while in the air to slam into the ground. Can be used to activate buttons, solve puzzles, and stomp enemies.
  • Slurp Shot
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Tribalstack Tropics
    • Use: Eat berries with the circle button and then shoot fire. Can be used to hurt enemies, activate switches and catch purple ghosts. Clicking the left stick will allow for greater accuracy.
  • Glide
    • Location: Free gift from Trowzer in the hub world of Hivory Towers
    • Use: Hold X while jumping to hover. Watch out for falling damage though, as it doesn’t last indefinitely!
  • Slurp State
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Glitterglaze Glacier
    • Use: Upgrade of Slurp Shot that allows the food Yooka eats to influence his physical state. (Honey makes him sticky and able to travel up slopes, cannon balls make him heavier, etc.)
  • Lizard Leap
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Glitterglaze Glacier
    • Use: Hold L2 before jumping to jump even higher than normal.
  • Bubble Buddy
    • Location: Free gift from Trowzer in the hub world of Hivory Towers
    • Use: Holding R2 under water will give Yooka-Laylee a bubble forcefield that will allow you to walk underwater and use other moves like the Buddy Slam.
  • Lizard Lash
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Moodymaze Marsh
    • Use: A grappling hook used to traverse through levels using specific “Lizard Lash” points.
  • Sonar ‘Splosian
    • Location: Purchasable from Trowser in Moodymaze Marsh
    • Use: Crouching and pressing triangle will release a shockwave that can stun or kill close enemies as well as break objects or knock them to the ground.
  • Camo Cloak

    • Use: Holding L2 and pressing circle will activate make you invisible (think Metal Gear Solid‘s stealth camo). This allows you to safely pass through the high security areas.
