Judging the PS Vita Before Christmas is “Preposterous” Says Sony

October 15, 2012 by Ian Miles Cheong

Sony says it’d be unfair to judge the success of the PS Vita before Christmas.

PS Vita

The sales of Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld console haven’t been the strongest, and the system’s been met with widespread criticism for its lack of games and lack of support for third party developers from Sony.

Sony, however, doesn’t think it’s fair for anyone to judge the system this “early” on, despite having been out in the market for quite some time. Speaking to MCV, Sony PlayStation UK’s Managing Director Fergal Gara admitted that the console’s sales dried up over the summer but he believes that the release of new games will revive the console in the run-up to the holiday season.

"We'd love for us to be further on," Gara said. "And the release schedule for Vita was rather like the release schedule for the industry this year, in that it did dry up during the summer. We had that incredible summer of sport and very little focus on gaming.”

"But the great news is that we have got the content in place. We have got the cash to invest in terms of marketing and retail to really ignite it this Christmas. To start judging a console before it has had its first Christmas is preposterous, really. And we are giving it everything we have got."

“Judging [the] console before it has had its first Christmas is preposterous,” he said.

The success of the PS Vita will undoubtedly depend on how well Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation and other titles will do over the holiday season, so we’ll just have to wait and see then, won’t we?
