The Last of Us Part II Devs Want Players to Feel Consequences of Their Violent Actions
Naughty Dog wants players to feel the consequences of their violent actions.
Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us 2, the sequel to the narrative survival title and one of the most critically acclaimed titles, The Last of Us, will feature violent action sequences. Director Neil Druckmann was recently featured in an interview with Kotaku, where he revealed the game’s development team didn’t want them to be mindless and pointless. Instead, they want players to feel the impact of their actions how it even affects people close to them, describing it as “the most honest way” to depict the post-apocalyptic nature of The Last of Us II.
We’re making a game about the cycle of violence and we’re making a statement about violent actions and the impact they have on the character that’s committing them and on the people close to them. And our whole approach is to say, ‘We want to treat this as realistically as possible.’ When you stab someone—if you watch reference videos, which we have, it’s gross and it’s messy and it’s not sanitized like you see in most movies and games. And we wanted to get the player to feel that.
As of the time of writing, The Last of Us II doesn’t yet have a release date.
