Gabe Newell: Microsoft Isn’t Purchasing Valve
The man himself confirms.
A couple of days ago, rumors began surfacing regarding Microsoft expanding its portfolio by purchasing up other studios and publishers. While EA was the most prominent one, Valve was another one of the companies that popped up in the rumor.
Now we know that the latter is actually false, Gabe Newell himself confirmed to a fan via email. Newell said that he is “not aware” of Valve being bought out by Microsoft. So, that ends that.
With regards to EA, however, we haven’t heard anything yet. That being said, Microsoft did recently purchase cloud engine company, PlayFab, so at least we do know that Microsoft is actually purchasing some companies.
As current generation consoles near the end of their life-span, certain entities have been acquiring cloud engine companies in order to be at the forefront of technology. Last week we announced that Epic Games have purchased Cloudgine, now we have news that Microsoft has acquired PlayFab. Microsoft corporate vice president of gaming Kareem Choudhry has explained the move as being beneficial to Microsoft’s Azure-powered cloud gaming efforts.
