Virtually nothing is off-limits for some sort of humour either. News is delivered by Weazel News (“Confirming your prejudicesâ€), post is delivered by GoPostal, security vans are provided by Gruppe6, and stocks are traded on the Bawsaq exchange. That should tell you a lot about the tone of humour in the game, but it should also demonstrate that there’s very little within the entire state that hasn’t had a good degree of thought and effort put into realising it. It feels like there’s nothing that there’s just to fill some space in the world.

Grand Theft Auto V is a stunning triumph in just about everything it attempts. Marrying gameplay brilliance to compelling characters and a world matched only in size by the number of things you can do in it, Rockstar’s magnum opus gives this console generation the send-off it deserves. Hundreds of hours of incredible fun, thought-provoking commentary, and storytelling excellence await, but you should play Grand Theft Auto V for another reason. It is a masterpiece–one of the greatest games ever made.

At the end of the day, the characters are quite relatable and are immersed in a very interesting and at times comedic storyline that is like an interactive version of the movie Pain & Gain that is all about power and wealth. The gameplay is flawless as are the graphics which creates one of the finest games of 2013 and will be a contender for Game of the Year. It’s easy to see why this is the most expensive game ever created and will be the most psychological game that you have ever played!

Not only does GTA V combine the very best of Rockstar’s previous IPs, it is simply the best experience of the franchise. The controls have been improved and the changes to familiar elements and mechanics add a great deal to the experience. Furthermore, the game offers a considerably more lighthearted tone than its predecessor (it can also be surprisingly deep at times), though it still finds opportunities to get rather dark especially when Trevor is involved. Grand Theft Auto V is everything you’d expect in a Rockstar product and once again, they have managed to significantly outdo themselves.

Is GTA perfect? Well it depends who you ask, but it is plenty of fun and in a time when we are looking to usher in a new generation of hardware, the fact this is running on a PS3 and looks and plays this good is simply mind-blowing. It isn’t a game that will appeal to everyone, as it is an open world, violent game without a moral compass. But boy can you have fun without worrying about morals.

GTA V bulldozes perceived limitations like no game ever has. It thrusts the PS3’s graphical facility to the point where one must wonder what Rockstar will be capable of on the forthcoming PS4. It pokes and prods the "Mature" rating to the very edge of its specifications; every fourth word is an emphatic swear, and the paramount motivation for any given exploit is a scorching mixture of unrestrained brutality, sexual mania, drug use, and countless other vices. Above all else, though, the game, quickly and without reservation, shoves the player out of the mortal shell they reside in and into the alternate cosmos of San Andreas, an empire of literally infinite possibilities, where dozens of tangibly zestful lifetimes can be spent in a matter of days.

Grand Theft Auto V marks a refinement entry for the franchise. Not only does the game go back to the thrill and scope of San Andreas, but on a technical level, having the visual quality and solid frame-rate that is on display here is an accomplishment on such old hardware. On top of that, you have Rockstar improving nearly all the mechanics of the game to such a level that everything now feels solid enough to be able to stand on its own. The story is engaging, the world is full of wonder and the three protagonists add diversity to storytelling and gameplay. Perfect is such a strong word to define something, and while no game is ever perfect, there is no denying that Rockstar aimed in the right direction to perfect the formula that Grand Theft Auto original started with in 1997.

That’s really the point to GTA V. As with previous games in the series, the main story is worth playing but it’s your story that you’ll remember the best. Those open world moments of hilarity that everyone else who has lived some time in that world will identify with. Those moments in the hills, preparing for an impromptu sniping session when a Bobcat eats you. That time you were riding your motorcycle through the hills and a deer literally charged you. The time you jumped from a jet and parachuted into a weird location you’d never known existed. GTA is as much about your stories as it is about its own, and that’s its true genius.

Grand Theft Auto V looks better, sounds better, plays better, and feels better than Grand Theft Auto IV, running on the same engine on the same console. What will the next GTA look and play like? Perhaps more importantly: what will the GTA after that game look and play like?

Most importantly, though, it’s the first game in the series where you feel as though you can strike out in any direction and find something entertaining to do. You can wander onto a golf course and find yourself in a reasonable facsimile of a Tiger Woods game, enhanced after every shot by Michael swearing and banging his club on the fairway. There are innumerable well-hidden items to recover, some of which are well protected. At one point I drove into the desert and found some sort of camper van, got out of my car, heard a weird zapping noise, then woke up naked on a railway line. Mystery! Serendipity! There’s a huge prison complex I haven’t even been to yet. It goes on and on.
