Kingdom Come: Deliverance
  • Developer: Warhorse Studios
  • Publisher: Warhorse Studios, Deep Silver
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XB1
  • Release: February 13, 2018

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an action RPG developed by Warhouse Studios. Set during the early 15th century, the game follows the story of Henry who is the son of a blacksmith that witnesses his parent’s death after a civil war breaks out. From there, it becomes your quest for revenge and since the game is already released, our experience with the title proves that this is a rather lengthy journey.

The game is a first-person RPG experience that is more approachable for gamers who are interested in playing a historically accurate video game rather than a fantasy setting made to resemble a medieval time.

Gamers will have to progress through the long narrative to hone their skills up as in the start, our protagonist Henry feels like just an everyday average Joe. You can expect to get well over forty hours within the game if you choose to both complete the main story narrative and the various extras.

Vampyr
  • Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
  • Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: June 5, 2018

Dontnod Entertainment has crafted up some popular titles so far. Their debut title Remember Me sparked the highly beloved Life is Strange IP.  Following up the release of Life is Strange is Vampyr, a vastly different IP then what the developers have worked.

Vampyr takes place during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic in London where players take the role of a doctor Jonathan Reid. Our protagonist is in a predicament as he is a vampire with a bloodthirsty nature, but is battling his condition with his Hippocratic Oath.

Being an action role-playing title, players can traverse parts of the world while also leveling up Jonathan in order to unlock new abilities and skills through the skill tree. It’s worth noting that the skill tree will not be linear allowing players to open up the various play styles available to enjoy during the game.

Darksiders 3
  • Developer: Gunfire Games
  • Publisher: THQ Nordic
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
  • Release: 2018

The Darksiders franchise continues on with developers Gunfire Games launching the third main installment sometime in 2018. This franchise is an action role-playing with a ton of hack-and-slash goodness.

So far, what we know about the video game is that the title will take place in a parallel world of events from the past video game installments. In this war-torn Earth, our protagonist, Fury, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, is in a quest to destroy the Seven Deadly Sins.

We’re still waiting to hear more information when it comes to Darksiders 3 though we are expecting RPG elements to be tossed throughout the game as they were in the past. However, at this point, we’ll just have to wait and see just what Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic reveals.

Code Vein
  • Developer: Bandai Namco Studios
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XO
  • Release: 2018

Code Vein is an upcoming title being developed by Shift, which you may know from their past works such as the God Eater franchise. Since its announcement, little information was given out in regards to Code Vein, although, thanks to the Tokyo Game Show, a new narrative trailer was officially unveiled.

This is an action role-playing video game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that is flooded with vampires. It seems that the worlds blood supply is running thin and as a result, there’s become a division between vampires.

Our protagonist is a rookie who must fight against the Queen and the corrupted bloodthirsty vampires that gave their allegiance to this seemingly unstoppable force. Being an action role-playing video game, there’s more freedom in how players attack their opponents, but the developers have opted to run with a Dark Souls style approach.

While we’re still waiting for more information to release when it comes to Code Vein, we do know that the development studio is looking to broaden some RPG elements in the game. For instance, the developers are allowing more ability to customize your character classes while other traditional RPG titles will often lock players to a certain character class as you level up throughout the game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Developer: Square Enix Business Division 1
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platform: PS4
  • Release: 2018

Out of all the Final Fantasy video game titles to have released, there’s no arguing that Final Fantasy VII is the most recognized and well-known among gamers. The video game title was such a big hit on the original PlayStation that it was still being brought up and talked about nearly decades later.

Now original fans and newcomers can once again relive the narrative journey soon with the Final Fantasy VII Remake. This will be a retelling of the original narrative that follows Cloud Strife and the eco-terrorist group known as Avalanche as they battle against the corrupt megacorporation, Shinra.

There are some slight change ups to the remake, for instance, this will be an action role-playing title that will be dropping the turn-based combat the original title was known for. It seems that while they are toning it down when it comes to RPG elements, the game will still allow more player control on how to play the game.

For fans who don’t want a typical action gameplay, Final Fantasy VII Remake will give players the ability to tweak their character’s battle style. Players are told that battles won’t slow down to a complete stop, but you will have enough time to strategically decide your attacks.

Kingdom Hearts 3
  • Developer: Square Enix 1st Production Department
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platforms: PS4
  • Release: 2018

Everyone should be well aware of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. The third installment is expected to release sometime 2018, continuing the narrative Disney story. Since the release of Kingdom Hearts 2, The Walt Disney Company had acquired Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment, and Lucasfilm, which could result in seeing a variety of characters and worlds from these three newly acquired companies. Just as before, we can expect Sora to be the leading protagonist in a journey filled with Disney settings and Final Fantasy characters.

We expect that players will still have more control of the story in that there will be sidequests, exploration, crafting and interacting with the various NPCs that will cross pathways.

With a heavy emphasis on exploring the world, the developers have crafted the combat mechanics to mimic the style shown off within Valkyrie Profile. This won’t be a very long RPG as the developers stated that the target completion time is around 20 hours, but because they may not be the most lengthy games out in the market, they will open up the possibility for players to replay the game.
